Sheeraz Cafe

  • Location: Gyumri, Armenia
  • Year: 2022
Sheeraz Cafe is located in Gyumri, one of the oldest cities in Armenia. Futuris Architects tried to keep the picturesque spirit of the city while designing the cafe with modern interior design. The main task was to create an atmosphere where traditional Armenian architecture in Gyumri meets contemporary design. As you can see, the project was a success as it combines the historical heritage of Gyumri with modern approaches.

The colors of the cafe match the palette of the city's other buildings. Every detail of the design is thoroughly chosen to go well together and create an atmosphere where people can have a drink or something to eat while feeling the city's rich culture.

Concept: A Design Inspired by Gyumri’s Legacy

The task was to create an environment where the past and the present meet through tricks of architecture and design. Luckily, many things were of help. Sheeraz Gyumri has the perfect location; it is in the city's heart and surrounded by other old buildings, a guideline for Futuris Architects’ designers. They did the design in the spirit of the different buildings. From the outside, it is in dark colors, like many buildings in Gyumri, but when you enter, you feel the warm, welcoming environment people feel when visiting Gyumri.

Sheeraz Gyumri also has an outdoor seating area, which is the perfect place to enjoy the city’s atmosphere. The terrace tables and chairs are warmly colored, creating an inviting atmosphere right from the outside. The building's walls are dark colors, matching Gyumri’s energy.

The arches, reminiscent of the city’s historic buildings, visually link to its heritage. The decorative motifs draw inspiration from the intricate patterns found in Gyumri’s renowned fountains. This fusion of old and new establishes a design language that is both historical and innovative.

Materials and Lighting: Filling Environment with Natural Elements

Gyumri is famous for its hospitality and inviting environment, so our designers tried to keep that spirit alive. A key element of the café’s design was using natural materials, which bring warmth to the space. Combining wood, beams, and woven details, we created a cozy environment that makes guests feel instantly at home. The ceiling features fabric installations that add an artistic touch, giving the space a sense of movement and lightness.

Material selection plays a fundamental role in achieving this balance. Natural elements like wood and textured fabrics create a tactile connection with the surroundings, reinforcing the space's warmth and authenticity. The lighting concept further enhances this dynamic, with strategically placed fixtures highlighting architectural details and adding depth to the environment. Subtle contrasts between light and shadow emphasize textures and forms, enhancing the spatial experience.

The soft glow of straw lamps and carefully placed warm lights accentuate the interior's earthy tones, reinforcing the balance between modern style and traditional influences. Thoughtfully arranged illumination highlights architectural features, ensuring that every element of the space contributes to an inviting and visually harmonious experience.

Conclusion: Balancing Tradition and Modernity

Sheeraz Cafe is one of the modern cafes in Gyumri, and its design carefully interplays historical inspiration and contemporary aesthetics. By integrating Gyumri’s architectural motifs with modern design principles, the space creates a visual narrative that respects tradition while embracing innovation. Arches and decorative patterns establish continuity with the city's past, while clean lines and minimalistic touches reflect a modern design sensibility.
